Feathers as structure
Plumage is painted in overlapping groups — head, nape, wing coverts, primaries, tail — each with its own direction and edge. Individual feathers are drawn only where they separate from the mass: wing tips, the crest of a cockatoo, the barring on a falcon's chest.
