Realistic Portrait Paintings From Your Photo
Realistic is what most people mean when they ask for a portrait from a photo: the likeness carried exactly, the light and colour of the original kept, and the paint doing the work rather than announcing itself.
- What it looks like
- Natural light and true colour; the photograph's reality, in paint
- Best for
- Pets, family portraits, memorial pieces, houses — anything where likeness is the point
- Detail levels
- Painterly · Refined · Hyperreal — all three available in this style
- Mediums
- Acrylic (default) or oil on canvas; charcoal, watercolour or pencil on paper
- Most ordered
- Realistic at the Refined level — the default unless you ask for something else
Realistic is the default, and for most commissions it is the right answer. You send a photograph of someone — a dog, a parent, a house — and you want that thing back, painted. Not reinterpreted, not stylised.
What “realistic” actually commits us to
The likeness, the light and the colour. If the photo was taken in late afternoon sun, the painting keeps that warmth. If the dog’s coat is three shades of brindle, all three go in.
What it does not commit us to is copying the background. Most reference photos have a kitchen, a car park or a sofa in them. Unless you want those kept, we simplify the setting into a quiet ground so the subject carries the picture — this is the single most common change we make, and we show it to you on the proof before anything ships.
Choosing a level of finish within this style
Realistic works at all three detail levels. Painterly keeps the likeness but leaves the brush visible; Refined resolves the features fully and is what most commissions are painted at; Hyperreal closes the strokes up until the surface reads as continuous, and is usually chosen for memorial and heirloom pieces.
If you want something other than realistic
We also paint in classical, impressionist and decorative styles. Say which you want when you send the photo, or send a picture of something you like and we will tell you what it would take.

Realistic portraits FAQ
Is realistic the same as photorealistic?
Not quite. Realistic keeps the light, colour and likeness of the photograph but still reads as a painting — you can see it was made by hand. Photorealistic is the far end of our Hyperreal detail level, where the strokes close up until the surface looks continuous. You can order either; realistic at Refined is what most people want.
Will it look exactly like my photo?
The likeness will. The rest is a judgement call we make with you — distracting backgrounds are usually simplified, colour casts from indoor lighting are corrected, and a cluttered setting is often replaced with a quiet ground so the subject carries the picture.
Can you make my photo look better than it is?
Within reason, and we say so before painting. We can correct colour, open up shadows, remove a lead or a background, and combine two photographs. We cannot invent detail that is not in the file — a face lost in shadow stays lost.
Which medium suits realistic work best?
Acrylic and oil both carry it. Acrylic is our default and ships sooner; oil gives slightly deeper darks and takes longer to cure. For a quiet, drawn realism, charcoal or graphite on paper.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
