Painting a Golden Retriever: what we pay attention to
Golden Retrievers are painted from the undercoat outward. A warm, mid-value base is laid in across the whole body, then the feathering on the ears, chest, legs and tail is added in successive layers of longer, lighter strokes. The last layer is a few individual hairs where the light catches the edge of an ear — not hundreds; enough to say “soft”.
The colour range in a single Golden runs from cream at the chest to near-copper at the ears, and keeping those relationships true to your dog is what separates a portrait from a breed illustration. We pick the background to sit opposite the coat on the colour wheel — soft greens and blue-greys make the gold glow without pushing the saturation.
The expression is the breed’s signature. A Golden’s face is broad and open, with a soft brow and a mouth that often looks like a smile; we paint it as it is in your photo rather than exaggerating it. For senior dogs the grey muzzle stays. For dogs with a favourite toy or a ball, a full-body composition on a landscape canvas can carry that story.

How do you paint the feathering without it looking like straw?
In layers. The coat is laid in as a soft mass first, then the feathering is built with longer, lighter strokes that lift off the mass and end in the direction of growth. Individual hairs are painted only at the edges where they catch the light.
My Golden is very pale, almost white — will the painting look washed out?
No. English cream Goldens are painted with a warm undertone and cool shadows so the coat has body. We often choose a slightly darker background for pale dogs so the outline of the head stays clear.
Do you paint older Goldens with grey muzzles as they are?
Yes, exactly as they are. The white on the muzzle and around the eyes is part of the dog; many memorial portraits of Goldens are of senior dogs, and the grey is painted with the same care as the gold.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
