Watercolour Portraits — Hand-Painted on Paper From Your Photo

Watercolour on archival paper is our lightest medium: transparent colour over white paper, informal and luminous, painted from your photo and shipped flat ready to frame behind glass.

Surface
300 gsm cotton watercolour paper
Paint
Artist-grade watercolours, lightfast pigments
Finish
Unvarnished; framed behind glass at destination
Look
Transparent, luminous, loose edges
Ships
Flat, between boards

Watercolour is transparent: the white of the paper shines through every wash, which gives the medium its light and its informality. A watercolour portrait has soft edges, a background that is often a single wash, and colour that glows rather than sits. It suits bright, outdoor photographs and subjects with light or mid-toned coats and skin.

What it does well — and not

A golden retriever in a garden, a child on a beach, a couple in daylight, a grey horse in a field: watercolour is at home with all of these. It is not the medium for a black dog in a dark room or a memorial portrait that needs every hair — deep shadow and fine detail are oil’s and acrylic’s territory. Faces are fully resolved; edges and backgrounds stay loose on purpose.

Paper, framing and shipping

Painted on 300 gsm cotton paper with lightfast colours, unvarnished, and shipped flat between rigid boards. Frame it behind glass, out of direct sun, and it will last for generations.

Watercolour portraits FAQ

What suits watercolour?

Light, informal subjects — a golden retriever in the garden, a child on a beach, an engagement photo in daylight, a horse in a field. Anything where luminosity matters more than deep shadow.

Is watercolour less detailed?

It is looser by nature. Faces are resolved, but the edges stay soft and the background is often just a wash. If you want individual hairs and pore-level detail, choose oil or acrylic at the Hyperreal level.

How is watercolour priced?

By size, number of subjects and medium at a single level of finish. It sits between charcoal and oil.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
