Painting a Macaw: what we pay attention to
Macaws carry the most saturated colour we paint, and the way to keep it glowing is to build it in transparent layers over a lighter underpainting rather than to lay it on flat. The blues, reds and yellows are strongest on the plane facing the light and deepen in the shadow to cooler, richer versions of themselves; the plumage is painted in feather groups — head, nape, breast, wing coverts, primaries, the long tail — with individual feathers drawn where they separate.
The bare face patch with its lines of tiny feathers is unique to each bird, like a fingerprint, and is drawn from your photo at the sketch stage; the massive beak is painted as smooth horn with a highlight along its curve; the eye is small and pale and painted last with a fine brush.
A macaw is a tall bird and suits a tall canvas — 16 × 24 in or larger — so the tail reaches the bottom edge without cropping. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study on a square canvas shows the face; wings spread on a landscape canvas shows the colour.

Macaw portrait FAQ
How do you paint colours that bright?
In transparent layers over a lighter underpainting, so the reds, blues and yellows glow rather than sit flat. The strongest saturation is reserved for the plane facing the light; the shadows are painted in cooler, deeper versions of the same colour.
Will the face lines be right?
Yes. The lines of tiny feathers on the bare face patch are unique to each bird and are drawn from your photo at the sketch stage.
What canvas suits a macaw?
A tall portrait canvas — 16 × 24 in or 20 × 30 in — so the bird and its tail fit without cropping. Head studies fit a square.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
