Painting a Falcon: what we pay attention to
Falcon portraits are a specialty for our clients in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, where a saker or a gyr on the fist is painted the way a stallion is painted elsewhere: as a portrait of an individual. We draw the bird from your photo — the set of the head, the hook of the beak, the dark, forward-facing eye and the malar stripe — and paint the plumage in feather groups, with the barring on the chest and wings painted as a pattern that sits on the overlapping rows of feathers.
Sakers are painted in warm browns and creams; peregrines in slate-blue with fine dark barring; gyrs from near-white to dark grey. The eye is large and dark and is painted last with a fine brush and a single catchlight; the cere and the feet are painted in their yellow or blue-grey as your bird shows them.
The falconry furniture — the hood with its embroidery, the jesses, the glove — is painted from your photos in detail if you want it, and most owners do. On the fist, three-quarter, with the head turned to the light is the classic composition; a head study, straight on, on a dark ground suits a majlis. Pieces ship direct to the Gulf and are often commissioned singly and in sets, as VIP and corporate gifts.

Can you paint a falcon for a client in the UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Falcon portraits — saker, peregrine and gyr — are a specialty for Gulf clients, painted from the owner's photos, on the fist or a block, hooded or bare-headed, and shipped direct to the Gulf. They are commissioned as personal pieces and as high-end corporate and VIP gifts.
How do you paint the barring on the chest and wings?
As a pattern that follows the feather groups — each bar sitting on its feather, the feathers overlapping in their rows — painted in earth colours over a cream base. Individual feathers are drawn where they separate at the wing tips and the tail.
Can you include the hood, the jesses and the glove?
Yes. Falconry furniture is part of the portrait for most owners and is painted from your photos in detail — the hood's embroidery, the leather of the jesses, the glove.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
