Painting a African Grey Parrot: what we pay attention to
An African Grey is painted as pattern and texture. The scalloped feathers — each grey feather edged with pale — are painted in overlapping groups that follow the bird’s form, from the fine feathers of the head and nape down to the broader wing coverts, with individual feathers drawn only where they separate: the wing tips, the tail. The famous red tail is painted warm and clean against the grey.
The face is a pale, bare patch around a small, pale-yellow eye, and the eye is the whole likeness: it is painted last with a fine brush, the dark pupil at the size in your photo and a single catchlight. The dark beak has a smooth, horn-like surface that is painted as a different material from the feathers.
Greys are intelligent, watchful birds and the expression in your photo — the slight tilt, the eye fixed on the camera — is kept. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study on a warm ground is the classic; a full body on a perch shows the tail. Timnehs are painted darker, with the maroon tail.

African Grey Parrot portrait FAQ
How do you paint the scalloped feathers?
As overlapping groups — head, nape, breast, wing coverts — each with its pale edge, painted as a pattern that follows the bird's form. Individual feathers are drawn only at the wing tips and the tail.
Will the pale eye come out right?
Yes. The pale yellow iris with its dark pupil is small and distinctive, and is painted last with a fine brush and a single catchlight.
Can you paint my bird with me?
Yes. A parrot on a shoulder or a hand, with the owner, is a common composition; we can combine separate photos if needed.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
