Compilation Portraits — Several Photographs Into One Painting
We combine several photographs into one hand-painted portrait — family members photographed in different places, pets that never met, a person who has passed added to a group — with a sketch of the arrangement for your approval before painting begins.
- Sources
- One photo per subject, any age, any date; old prints welcome
- Subjects
- 2 to 6 in one painting; more on request
- Process
- Layout sketch → your approval → painting → digital proof
- Mediums
- Acrylic (default) or oil on canvas; charcoal or pencil on paper
- Pricing
- By size, number of subjects, detail level and medium — combining is not charged separately
Most group portraits are compilations, because the best photograph of each person is rarely the same photograph. We take one photo per subject — any age, any date, an old print or a phone photo — and build one painting from them: scale matched, eye lines related, light from one side, clothing that sits together. You see the arrangement as a sketch and approve or change it before the painter begins.
What people combine
- A family spread across countries, photographed apart, painted together — see family portraits.
- A grandparent who has passed with a grandchild they never met — see grandparents and grandchildren.
- Pets that never met, or a pet who has passed with the pet you have now.
- A person and their animal, when the dog never looks at the camera at the same moment — see people with their pets.
- A parent at a wedding they missed, painted into the wedding photograph.
How the sketch works
From your photos we draft the composition: who stands where, the heights of the heads, which way each turns, where the light comes from, what everyone wears. The sketch goes to you; you approve, or move someone, or swap a photo. Only then does painting start, and the digital proof at the end is where the likenesses are checked one by one.
Price and medium
Combining is not charged separately — price is set by size, number of subjects, detail level and medium. Oil is the default; charcoal on paper suits a quieter compilation from old black-and-white photographs. Photographers and memorial services order compilation portraits for their clients at trade pricing from one piece.
Proof of hand
Real paint, real brushstrokes
Every piece is completed by one painter from start to finish — no assembly line. Below: a close-up crop of a finished painting, and a painter at work. Every image on this site is a photograph of real hand-painted work.
Compilation portraits FAQ
Is combining photos extra?
No. Price is set by size, number of subjects, detail level and medium; whether the subjects came from one photo or five does not change it.
How do you make people from different photos look like they are together?
Scale, eye line and light. Heads are scaled to each other, eye lines brought into a natural relationship, and everyone lit from the same side; clothing is taken from the photos or simplified to a palette that sits together. The sketch shows all of this before painting.
Can you combine a pet who has passed with the pet we have now?
Yes. Animals that never met are painted together from separate photographs; it is one of the most common compilation commissions.
What is the maximum number of subjects?
Six in a single painting at a size where every face is at least the size of a fist; larger groups are possible on a larger canvas and are quoted individually.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
