Painting a Budgerigar: what we pay attention to
A budgie is painted at two or three times life size, which is where it becomes a portrait: the fine barring on the head, the scalloped back, the row of throat spots, the coloured cere above the beak and the round, dark eye each get their space. The plumage is painted in groups — head, back, wing coverts, the long tail — with the barring and scalloping painted as a pattern that follows the form.
Colour is the joy of the breed and is matched from a daylight photo, painted in layers over a lighter base so the greens and blues glow. The cere — blue on most males, brown or tan on females — is painted as it is, because it is part of the face owners know.
Budgies are the most common small-bird memorial we paint, usually from a few casual phone photos, and we tell you honestly what the references will support. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study is the classic; a pair on a perch from separate photos is a favourite.

Budgerigar portrait FAQ
How do you paint a bird that small?
At two or three times life size. The barred head, the throat spots, the cere and the round dark eye become a portrait at that scale, and the scalloped back is painted as a pattern that follows the form.
Will the colour be right?
Yes — greens, blues, yellows, violets and greys are matched from a daylight photo and painted in layers so they glow.
Can you paint a memorial of a budgie from a few phone photos?
Yes. Small-bird memorials are common and usually painted from casual photos; send everything you have.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
