Custom Horse Portraits, Hand-Painted From Your Photo

We paint horse and pony portraits by hand from your photo, from a head study to a full conformation portrait.

Equine portraits demand anatomy. A horse owner sees a wrong shoulder angle or a soft throat-latch instantly, so we draw from the photo with measured proportions and confirm the sketch with you before painting. The breed pages below note what defines each type on canvas — the Arabian's dished face, the Friesian's feather, the Thoroughbred's clean lines.

Horses: portraits by breed

Each page explains what we pay attention to when painting that breed, which compositions work, and how to photograph them. Not listed? Send the photo anyway.

How we paint horses

What matters on the canvas

Conformation before charm

We paint the horse you own, not a generic horse. The head-to-neck join, the eye placement, the slope of the shoulder and the set of the ears are taken from your photo with proportional measuring. Owners and breeders notice when these are wrong; the digital proof is where you tell us if anything is off.

Coat sheen and colour

A healthy coat reflects light in a way fur does not. Bays, chestnuts and blacks are built from warm darks with sharp, cool highlights along the muscle; greys and dapples are painted as a pattern of soft-edged spots with the skin showing through at the muzzle and eyes. Sheen is placed once, in the right spot, not everywhere.

Head studies and full portraits

The head study — from the eye to the muzzle, ears up — is the most popular composition and suits a square or portrait canvas. Full-body standing portraits (the classic "conformation" view) suit a landscape canvas and are common for stallions, show horses and memorial pieces. Tack can be included or left out; most owners prefer a halter or none.

Arabian horses, falcons and the Gulf

Arabian horse portraits are a specialty for clients in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, where they are commissioned as gifts, for stables and for offices. The dished profile, large eye and high tail carriage are painted with care because buyers in this market know the breed standard intimately.

Photo tips

Photographing horses for a portrait

  • Shoot at the horse's eye level, slightly to the front for a head study or square-on from the side for a conformation portrait.
  • Soft morning or late-afternoon light shows the coat's sheen without harsh shadows.
  • Ears forward: have a helper stand behind the camera with a rustling bag.
  • Include the whole head and neck, and for full-body shots all four legs with a clear outline.

Horses portrait FAQ

Can you paint my horse with tack, a rider or a rosette?

Yes. Bridles, saddles, riders and show rosettes are all painted from your photos. Tell us what to include; many owners choose a plain halter or no tack so the horse itself is the focus.

Do you paint horses for stables, studs and equestrian businesses?

Yes. Studs, riding clubs, saddlers and equestrian gift retailers order at trade pricing from one piece. Portraits of stallions and champions for reception walls are a common request.

Can you paint a horse that has passed away from old photos?

Yes. Memorial horse portraits are often painted from a mix of older photos — one for the head, another for the coat colour — and we tell you plainly what detail level the references support.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
