Painting a Camel: what we pay attention to
Camel portraits are a specialty for our clients in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, where a racing or show camel is painted with the same seriousness as an Arabian horse. We draw the head from your photo at the sketch stage — the long lashes, the split upper lip, the wide nostrils, the small ears, the curve of the neck — and confirm the sketch with you before painting, because camel owners know their animals’ faces intimately.
The coat is short and dense, painted with strokes that follow the muscle of the neck and the shoulder, with the longer hair on the hump and the throat painted as a softer mass. Creams and fawns are kept warm against a cool sky or a shaded ground; browns and blacks are painted as colour with a sheen placed once along the neck. The face — the eye with its lashes, the lips — carries the painting.
A three-quarter head-and-neck study on a dark, quiet ground is the composition most often requested for a majlis or an office; a standing profile on a landscape canvas, with or without the halter, tassels and blanket of a show camel, is the breeder’s piece; a racing camel at a run is painted from a sharp action frame. Pieces ship direct to the Gulf and are commissioned as personal pieces, in sets, and as VIP gifts.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Camel doing?
A camel has the best eyelashes of any animal we paint, a split upper lip that works like two fingers, and a profile built entirely of curves. They are photographed against sky more than against anything else.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Camel alone, or with the people the Camel belongs to.
-
The eye and the lashes
Very tight crop on a dark eye with two rows of long lashes over it. Painted lash by lash with a single loaded stroke each, which is what makes them lashes rather than a shadow.
-
The split lip
Close on the muzzle where the upper lip divides and moves. An odd, specific, rarely painted detail and the thing that makes a camel face a camel face.
-
Head against the sky
Looking up and away with nothing behind but light. A tall canvas, almost nothing in it, the silhouette carrying everything.
-
The hump in profile
Full body side-on against flat ground. Painted on a wide canvas where the single curve of the back organises the whole picture.
-
In harness or saddle
Rugs, tassels, worked leather, a decorated saddle. The tack is painted in full colour against a muted animal, which is how it actually reads.

Camel portrait FAQ
Can you paint a camel for a client in the UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Camel portraits — racing camels, show camels and family animals — are a specialty for Gulf clients, painted from the owner's photos and shipped direct to the Gulf. They are commissioned for majlis walls, offices and as corporate and VIP gifts.
How do you paint the face?
The long lashes, the split upper lip, the wide nostrils and the small ears are drawn from your photo at the sketch stage and painted as the focal points; camels have among the most expressive faces we paint.
Do you paint show camels with their decorations?
Yes. Halters, tassels, blankets and racing numbers are painted from your photos in detail if you want them.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
