Painting a Alpaca: what we pay attention to

An alpaca is painted for its face — large, dark, long-lashed eyes, a small muzzle, banana-shaped ears and a topknot of fleece that gives every alpaca a hairstyle — on a long neck that suits a portrait canvas. We draw the head from a straight-on photo at eye level and paint the eyes with a soft catchlight and the lashes drawn individually; the expression, which sits somewhere between serene and startled, is kept as your photo has it.

Huacaya fleece is painted as a dense, crimped mass with the crimp shown as soft ripples of light and shadow; Suri fleece as long, silky locks in flowing strokes. Against the fleece, the face and the lower legs are painted as short, fine hair, and that contrast is what makes the fleece read. Colours — white, fawn, brown, black, grey, rose-grey — are matched from an overcast-daylight photo.

A straight-on head-and-neck study on a soft ground is the piece; a pair side by side from separate photos is a favourite; a full body on a landscape canvas shows the fleece in full. Alpaca head studies are also a popular decor subject for nurseries and shops. Llamas are painted the same way at their own proportions.

Scenes and settings

What do people have us paint a Alpaca doing?

An alpaca is a fleece with a long neck and a fringe over its eyes, and it hums. They are kept in groups, they are shorn once a year, and the animal before and after shearing looks like two different species.

Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Alpaca alone, or with the people the Alpaca belongs to.

  • The fringe over the eyes

Head-on, topknot hanging down, eyes barely visible beneath it. Painted with the fringe as separated hanging locks and the eyes found behind them, which is the face everyone recognises.

  • The fleece, close up

Tight crop where the fibre crimps in waves across the shoulder. Painted as rows of soft crimp with light sitting on the top of each wave — rendered flat it looks like carpet.

  • The long neck, in profile

Side-on, neck rising out of a body like a barrel. A tall canvas; the proportions are comic and entirely characteristic.

  • The herd in a field

Several animals at different distances, all looking the same way. A wide landscape where the group makes the composition and no single animal has to carry it.

  • Just shorn

Suddenly thin, long-legged and faintly embarrassed. Painted honestly; owners find this version funny and it makes a better pair with the fleeced one than either does alone.

Alpaca portrait FAQ

How do you paint alpaca fleece?

Huacaya as a dense, crimped mass with the crimp shown as soft ripples of light and shadow; Suri as long, silky locks painted in flowing strokes. The face is painted as short, fine hair against it so the fleece reads.

Do you paint llamas too?

Yes, with their larger size, longer banana ears and coarser coat drawn from your photo.

Can you paint an alpaca as a decor piece for a nursery or a shop?

Yes. Alpaca head studies are a popular decor subject and are ordered at trade pricing by designers, gift shops and Etsy sellers.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
