Painting a Cattle: what we pay attention to

Cattle are painted with the same attention to structure as horses, because breeders judge them the same way. A champion bull or a show heifer is painted from a side-on photo with the feet placed, and the topline, the depth of body and the set of the head are measured at the drawing stage; the sketch is confirmed before painting. A pet cow or a favourite in the herd is painted for its face.

Breeds are painted as they are: Jerseys with their dark, ringed eyes and warm fawn coats; Herefords with the white face and curly poll; Angus as colour, black or red; Holsteins with their patches mapped at the sketch; Longhorns with the horns drawn carefully for spread and curve; Belted Galloways with the belt and the shaggy coat; Dexters small and neat. The broad, wet muzzle carries the thickest highlight on the canvas.

A straight-on head study on a soft ground is the piece for the house; a standing profile on a landscape canvas is the breeder’s portrait; a cow and calf together is a favourite for farms and smallholdings.

Scenes and settings

What do people have us paint a Cattle doing?

Cattle portraits are commissioned by breeders, showmen and smallholders, and the brief is usually a specific animal rather than a type — so conformation matters and so do the markings. The eye of a cow, with its lashes and its calm, is one of the best things in animal painting.

Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Cattle alone, or with the people the Cattle belongs to.

  • Clipped and led, in the ring

Halter on, topline clipped, standing square with a handler at the head. Painted with the conformation exactly as the animal stands, because this is a working record as well as a picture.

  • Head over the gate

Ears out, nose wet, chewing, looking straight at you. A close landscape crop with the gate as a hard horizontal — the most companionable portrait a cow gives you.

  • The herd in the field

Several animals at different distances with one in the near ground. A wide landscape painted with the group loose and the nearest animal detailed.

  • The eye and the lashes

Tight crop on a dark eye, long lashes, the whorl of hair above it. Painted with the hair whorl followed exactly, because on a cow the hair grows in patterns that give the whole head its structure.

  • The markings, mapped

Full body side-on with every patch where it actually is. Drawn from your photograph as a map; on a broken-coloured animal the pattern is the identification.

Cattle portrait FAQ

Do you paint champion bulls and show cattle?

Yes. Breeders commission portraits of champions for the farmhouse and the office, painted from a side-on show photo with the conformation measured at the drawing stage — breeders notice a wrong topline at once.

How do you paint a Jersey's face?

With its dark eyes and the pale ring around them, the dished face and the fawn coat kept warm — Jerseys are the most-painted dairy breed because the face is so gentle.

Can you paint a cow and calf?

Yes, from one photo or separate ones, arranged at a consistent scale with the layout confirmed as a sketch.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
