Painting a Pig: what we pay attention to
A pig is painted the way a person is: as skin. Thin, warm layers with cool halftones in the folds and under the jowls, the sparse bristle shown as light catching the edge of the form, and the snout — the face of the animal — painted as wet, textured skin with a highlight on the disc and the nostrils drawn carefully. The small, intelligent eyes, often half-hidden under the ears, are painted with a sharp catchlight so they hold the painting.
Breeds are painted as they are: pink pigs with the skin colour varying from cream to rose; blacks as colour; Gloucestershire Old Spots with their patches mapped at the sketch; Tamworths ginger and bristly; Kunekunes and Mangalitsas with the coat painted as a soft mass more like a sheep than a pink pig; belted breeds with the band drawn at the sketch.
A straight-on head-and-shoulders study with the ears filling the frame is the portrait; a full body from the side on a landscape canvas shows the stocky outline; a piglet painted larger than life is a favourite for nurseries and gift shops.
Scenes and settings
What do people have us paint a Pig doing?
Pigs are kept as pets as well as livestock, and they are intelligent enough that the eye looks back at you. The skin shows through a sparse bristle coat, which makes a pig closer to painting a figure than painting an animal.
Almost none of the photographs that reach us are posed. They are the ordinary moments somebody kept — and those are the ones worth a canvas. Any of the settings below can be painted as the Pig alone, or with the people the Pig belongs to.
-
The snout, close up
Tight crop on a flat wet disc of a nose with two nostrils and a lot of texture. Painted as damp patterned skin against dry bristle — the single most characteristic thing on the animal.
-
In the mud
Lying in a wallow, half coated, entirely content. Painted with the mud glossy and heavy over the skin and the dry parts kept pale and warm.
-
Bristles in raking light
Light across the back so the sparse hairs catch and the skin shows between them. Painted as individual bristles over visible skin, which is nothing like painting fur.
-
Asleep in a heap
Several pigs piled together, all touching, none distinguishable. A wide landscape canvas where the heap is one form and the individual animals emerge out of it.
-
A piglet
Small, striped or spotted, legs going. Painted loose and quick; the proportions change so fast at that age that the painting is of one particular week.

Pig portrait FAQ
How do you paint pig skin?
As skin, with thin warm layers and cool halftones the way a human portrait is painted, and the sparse bristle as light catching the edge of the form. The snout is painted as wet, textured skin with a highlight on the disc.
Do you paint hairy breeds differently?
Yes — Kunekunes and Mangalitsas are painted with the coat as a soft mass with strands at the edges, more like a sheep than a pink pig.
Will the small eyes come through?
Yes. A pig's eyes are small, intelligent and often half-hidden by the ears; we paint them with a sharp catchlight so they read as the focal point.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
