Painting a Scottish Fold: what we pay attention to
The Scottish Fold is an owl in cat form — a round head, large round eyes set wide, and small ears folded forward and down that make the head look even rounder. We draw that outline carefully from your photo: the fold of the ears, the width of the cheeks, the exact set of the eyes. It is the roundness, more than the colour, that owners recognise.
The coat is short and plush and is painted as a soft, dense edge with strokes that follow the round forms; Highland Folds with semi-long coats are painted in soft layers. Blues are painted as cool blue-greys with warm silver highlights; tabbies have their pattern mapped and painted through; whites get warm and cool greys in the shadows. The eyes — copper, gold, green or blue depending on the coat — are glazed to keep them luminous.
A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a square canvas is the composition: the symmetrical face and the folded ears fill it perfectly. The sitting-up “Buddha” pose makes a charming full-body alternative.

Scottish Fold portrait FAQ
How do you paint the folded ears?
As small, soft forms tucked against the round skull, with a shadow under the fold. They change the outline of the head completely, and we draw that outline from your photo at the sketch stage.
Do you paint straight-eared Scottish cats too?
Yes — Scottish Straights have the same round face and are painted the same way with upright ears.
Can you paint the sitting-up "Buddha" pose?
Yes. Folds sit on their haunches with the paws in front in a way few cats do, and it makes a charming full-body piece.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
