Painting a Maine Coon: what we pay attention to
Maine Coons are painted big. The head is broad and square-muzzled, the ears are tall with lynx tips, the ruff frames the face like a collar, and the whole cat has a presence that asks for a larger canvas than most cats get. We paint the head at or near life size on a 16 × 20 in or 18 × 24 in canvas, and full-body pieces on a landscape canvas for owners who want the plumed tail and the britches.
The long coat and the pattern are painted together: the tabby stripes, the “M” on the forehead and the rings on the tail are mapped first as shapes, then the fur is painted through them in the direction of growth, so the pattern wraps around the cheeks and the ruff. The long hair is built in layers with a few individual strands drawn where they catch the light — the ear tips, the edge of the ruff, the toe tufts — with a fine sable brush over dry paint.
The eyes are large, slightly oblique and often a warm gold or green, and they are glazed in transparent layers to keep them luminous against the heavy coat. Hyperreal is the level most Maine Coon owners choose; there is simply more to see.
