Painting a Ragdoll: what we pay attention to
Ragdolls are painted for their eyes and their calm. The eyes are always blue and are painted as glass: a translucent layer of blue over a lighter base, the pupil at the size your photo shows, and a single sharp catchlight. The shade — from a pale sky-blue to a deep sapphire — varies between cats and is matched from a daylight photo, never from a flash.
The point pattern is mapped at the sketch stage — the mask, the ears, the legs and tail in the point colour, the mitts or the inverted V on a bicolour — so the edges fall correctly on the body, and then the semi-long, plush coat is painted through it in soft layers. The ruff is painted as a soft mass with a few silky strands at the edge; the body colour is kept pale and warm against the darker points.
The breed’s manner is relaxed to the point of going limp, and the “flop” — on the back, paws up — is a composition owners of Ragdolls particularly ask for, on a landscape canvas. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a pale ground, the blue eyes as the subject, is the classic.

Ragdoll portrait FAQ
How do you paint the blue eyes?
As glass — a translucent layer of blue over a lighter base, with a dark pupil at the size in your photo and a single sharp catchlight. The exact shade of blue varies between cats and is matched from a daylight photo.
Colourpoint, mitted or bicolour — does it matter?
Only for the drawing. The point pattern is mapped at the sketch stage — the mask, the ears, the mitts, the inverted V on a bicolour — so the edges fall correctly, then the plush coat is painted through it.
Can you paint the flop?
Yes. A Ragdoll on its back with the paws up, painted on a landscape canvas, is a piece owners of this breed love.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
