Painting a British Shorthair: what we pay attention to
The British Shorthair is a study in roundness: a round head, round cheeks, round copper eyes, and a cobby body under a plush, dense coat. We draw the head carefully for its proportions — the width of the cheeks, the small ears set wide, the short nose — because the breed’s likeness is in the geometry as much as the colour.
The blue coat is painted as colour, not grey: cool blue-greys in the shadow under the chin and inside the legs, warm silvers where the light strikes the top of the head and the shoulder, and a soft, dense edge that shows the plush texture. A warm ground makes the blue glow. Lilacs, creams, blacks and tabbies are painted as ranges in the same way.
The eyes are large, round and copper or gold, and they are the second subject of the painting; they are matched from a daylight photo and glazed in transparent layers so they read as luminous. The breed’s expression is calm and slightly smug, and a straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a square canvas is the composition that shows it.

British Shorthair portrait FAQ
How do you paint the blue coat?
As colour — cool blue-greys in the shadow, warm silvers where the light hits — with the plush texture shown as a soft, dense edge. Against a warm background the blue glows.
The face is very round — will it look right?
Yes. The round head, full cheeks and small ears are drawn carefully for their proportions, and the eyes — large, round, copper or gold — are set at the exact width your photo shows. The breed's slightly smug expression is kept.
Do you paint British Shorthairs in other colours?
Yes — lilac, cream, black, white, silver and golden tabby, bicolour. Each is painted as a range of colour rather than a flat tone.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
