Painting a Russian Blue: what we pay attention to
A Russian Blue is two colours that need each other: a cool, blue-grey coat with silver tips, and eyes of a vivid green. We paint the coat as a dense blue-grey mass with the silver shown as light on the edges — along the top of the head, the shoulder and the back where the light catches the tips — and the eyes as translucent layers of green over a lighter base so they glow. A warm ground makes both colours read.
The head is a wedge with large ears set wide and a straight profile, and the mouth corners turn up in the breed’s slight smile. We draw the head from your photo at the sketch stage — three-quarter is the angle that shows the wedge — and keep the expression as it is: reserved, watchful, a little shy.
The short, plush coat is painted with a soft, dense edge and strokes that follow the elegant form. A three-quarter head-and-shoulders study on a warm ground is the classic; a full body seated upright shows the fine outline.

Russian Blue portrait FAQ
How do you paint the silver tipping?
As light on the edges: the coat is painted as a blue-grey mass with the silver shown where the light catches the tips along the top of the head, the shoulder and the back. Painted as speckles it looks like dust; painted as light it looks like the breed.
Will the eyes be green enough?
Yes — vivid green, matched from a daylight photo and glazed in transparent layers so they glow against the cool coat. The warm ground we usually choose for this breed makes both the green and the blue read.
Do you paint the "smile"?
Yes. The upturned mouth corners are part of the breed's face and are painted as your photo shows them.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
