Painting a Norwegian Forest Cat: what we pay attention to
The Norwegian Forest Cat is drawn from its geometry: an equilateral triangle for a head, a straight profile, large ears with lynx tips set high, and almond eyes. Owners of the breed see the difference from a Maine Coon at once — the straighter profile, the more pointed face — and so do we, at the drawing stage, from your photo.
The coat is long, layered and wild, and it is painted that way: the pattern mapped first as shapes, the fur painted through it in the direction of growth, and the ruff, britches and bushy tail built in soft layers with a few individual strands drawn where they catch the light. Winter-coat photos give the fullest reference. Brown and silver tabbies are the most common; blacks, whites and bicolours are painted as colour with grey shadows in the whites.
The eyes are large, almond and often green or gold, and are glazed to keep them luminous. A head-and-shoulders study at 16 × 20 in or larger is the classic; a full body on a landscape canvas shows the tail, which for this breed is a large part of the cat.

Norwegian Forest Cat portrait FAQ
How is a Norwegian Forest Cat different from a Maine Coon on canvas?
The head. The Wegie has an equilateral triangle for a face with a straight profile and almond eyes; the Maine Coon has a squarer muzzle and a slight curve to the profile. We draw the head from your photo, and owners of either breed see the difference at once.
How do you paint the long coat and the pattern?
Pattern first as shapes, then fur painted through it in the direction of growth, then the ruff, britches and tail built in soft layers with a few strands at the edges.
What canvas size suits the breed?
16 × 20 in or larger for a head-and-shoulders study; full-body pieces on a landscape canvas are popular because the tail and britches are a large part of the cat.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
