Painting a Ginger Cat: what we pay attention to
Ginger cats are painted in three temperatures: a cool cream at the chin, chest and belly; a clean, warm orange through the cheeks and flanks; and a deep red-brown in the stripes, the tail rings and the M on the forehead. Painted as one orange the cat looks like a toy; painted as a range, it glows. We take the range from a daylight photo out of direct sun, and choose a cool ground — a blue-grey or a soft green — so the warmth reads as rich rather than loud.
The tabby pattern — classic swirls, mackerel stripes or ticked — is mapped first as soft-edged shapes and the fur painted through it, so the stripes wrap around the cheeks and the body instead of sitting flat. White paws, bibs and blazes are drawn at the sketch stage and painted with cool shadows.
Ginger cats are often big, cheeky males with full cheeks, and the expression is usually confident and a little dim in the most lovable way. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study is the classic; a full-body loaf with the stripes wrapping the body suits a square canvas.

Ginger Cat portrait FAQ
How do you keep the coat from looking garish?
By painting the range — pale cream at the chin and chest, clean orange on the cheeks, deep red-brown in the stripes — from a daylight photo, and by choosing a cool background so the warmth reads as rich rather than loud.
Will the M on the forehead show?
Yes. The M, the eyeliner lines and the cheek stripes are mapped at the sketch stage and painted as soft-edged shapes, then the fur is painted through them.
My ginger has white paws and a white bib — do you paint that?
Yes. White areas are drawn at the sketch stage and painted with cool shadows so they sit in the coat.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
