Painting a Burmese: what we pay attention to
A Burmese is painted as satin and gold. The coat is short, fine and glossy, and it is painted as sheen over form — a soft highlight placed once along the top of the head, the shoulder and the back, over a warm, glossy dark — rather than as texture. Sables are deep warm brown; champagnes a warm beige; blues and platinums cooler and softer. The eyes are gold and are glazed in transparent layers so they glow against the coat.
The head is rounded with full cheeks and a short muzzle, and the body is compact and heavier than it looks. We draw the head from a straight-on photo at eye level — the round face and the wide-set gold eyes are the likeness — and keep the expression as it is: sweet, direct, slightly demanding.
A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a cool ground, which makes the warm coat glow, is the composition for this breed.

Burmese portrait FAQ
How do you paint the satin coat?
As sheen over form — a soft highlight placed once where the light strikes the top of the head, the shoulder and the back, over a warm, glossy dark. Painted as texture it looks wrong; painted as light it looks like satin.
Will the eyes be gold?
Yes — from a deep gold to a yellow-green depending on the cat, matched from a daylight photo and glazed to glow against the dark coat.
Do you paint the European and the American types?
Yes. The rounder American head and the more moderate European wedge are both drawn from your photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
