Painting a Appaloosa: what we pay attention to
An Appaloosa is painted for its pattern, and the pattern is drawn before anything else. At the sketch stage the spots, the edge of a blanket, the frosting of a varnish roan and the mottling on the muzzle are mapped from your photo so that each mark falls where it does on your horse; the proof is where you check them. The spots are then painted as coat with soft edges that follow the curve of the body.
The breed’s other characteristics — the white sclera around the eye, the mottled skin at the muzzle and around the eyes, the striped hooves and the sparse mane and tail — are painted exactly as your horse shows them; they are the breed, and Appaloosa owners look for them.
The base coat is painted as colour: bays warm with black points, chestnuts from copper to liver, blacks as cool and warm darks, duns with their primitive markings. A standing profile on a landscape canvas shows the whole pattern; a three-quarter head study shows the eye and the muzzle. Knabstruppers and other spotted horses are painted the same way.

Appaloosa portrait FAQ
Will every spot be in the right place?
Yes. The pattern is drawn from your photo at the sketch stage — a leopard's spots, a blanket's edge, a varnish roan's mottling — and painted as coat with soft edges that follow the body. We do not tidy or invent it.
Do you paint the mottled skin and the white sclera?
Yes. The mottled muzzle and eye area and the visible white around the eye are breed characteristics and are painted exactly as your horse shows them.
Do you paint Knabstruppers and other spotted breeds?
Yes, with the same mapping approach.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
