Painting a English Bulldog: what we pay attention to
The Bulldog head is a landscape of folds, and the portrait works when those folds are painted as forms with a lit and a shaded side rather than as drawn lines. We keep the light soft and slightly from above, so the rope over the nose, the jowls and the brow each have a top plane that catches light and a lower plane that turns into shadow.
The short coat shows every plane of that heavy head, so the strokes follow the surface — across the flat top of the skull, around the cheeks, down into the loose skin of the neck. Whites and piebalds are painted with warm and cool greys in the shadows to keep the dog solid; brindles are mapped first as a pattern and painted through.
The expression is the reason people love the breed: a heavy, dignified, slightly mournful face that looks like it is thinking about lunch. We paint it straight, without exaggerating the underbite or the jowls, and place the small, dark eyes carefully in their deep sockets. A low viewpoint on a landscape canvas gives the dog the weight it carries in life.

English Bulldog portrait FAQ
How do you paint the wrinkles?
As form, not lines. Each fold has a lit side and a shaded side, and we paint those planes so the wrinkles look like flesh over bone. Drawn lines are the reason most Bulldog portraits look like cartoons.
Can you paint the piebald patches accurately?
Yes. Patches are drawn at the sketch stage so the edges fall in the right places on the head and body, then painted as fur with a soft edge where the white and colour meet.
My Bulldog has a screw tail and stands a particular way — will that show?
If you want it to. A full-body composition on a landscape canvas captures the stance; a head study concentrates on the face. Tell us which matters more to you.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
