Painting a Beagle: what we pay attention to
Beagles are painted around two things: the ears and the eyes. The long, soft, low-set ears frame the face and give the breed its outline, so we keep them fully in the composition and paint the velvet of the ear leather with soft-edged strokes that turn away from the light. The eyes are large, dark and slightly pleading, with a lot of the expression carried in the brow — we paint the brow shapes with care and keep the catchlights soft rather than sharp.
The tricolour coat is drawn at the sketch stage so the saddle, the tan head and the white blaze fall in the right places, then painted as three surfaces with feathered edges where they meet. The tan around the eyes is kept warm so the face glows against the black of the saddle. Lemon and red Beagles are painted with the same warmth, just lighter.
Beagles are hounds, and a full-body composition with the nose to the ground on a landscape canvas is a piece owners of working or scent-obsessed dogs particularly like. For most, a head-and-shoulders study on a plain warm ground, the white-tipped tail just visible, says everything.

How do you paint the tricolour markings?
The black saddle, the tan head and the white blaze are drawn in at the sketch stage so the edges fall correctly, then painted as three surfaces with feathered transitions where they meet. The tan around the eyes is kept warm so the face glows.
Can you paint my Beagle with its nose down on a trail?
Yes. A landscape-format full-body composition of the dog working a scent is a strong piece and shows the breed doing what it was bred for. Send a side-on photo in even light.
Will the soft, pleading eyes come through?
That is the point of the portrait. Beagle eyes are large, dark and slightly heavy-lidded, with a lot of expression in the brow; we paint the brow shapes carefully and keep the catchlights soft.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
