Painting a Ferret: what we pay attention to
Ferrets are painted for their faces and their shape. The mask — dark fur over the eyes and across the nose on a sable, absent on an albino, a blaze or a panda on the patterned ones — is drawn from your photo at the sketch stage, because it varies from ferret to ferret and owners know theirs. The eyes are small, bright and round and are painted last with a sharp catchlight; the small rounded ears and the pink nose are painted crisply.
The body is long, low and sinuous, and a full-body composition on a landscape canvas — stretched out, curled, or draped over something — shows it. The coat is short and dense with a paler undercoat showing through, painted as a soft mass with the guard hairs shown as slightly darker strokes along the back.
Sables are kept warm with the cream undercoat showing at the edges; cinnamons and chocolates warm; silvers cool; albinos and dark-eyed whites as white in colour with the nose and eyes matched. A business of ferrets tangled together, from one or several photos, is a composition owners of more than one ask for often.

Ferret portrait FAQ
How do you paint the mask?
As soft-edged dark fur over the eyes and across the nose, drawn from your photo at the sketch stage — ferret masks vary and owners know theirs. The bright, round eyes are painted last with a sharp catchlight.
Can you paint two ferrets together?
Yes — a business of ferrets tangled together is a favourite composition, from one photo or several, arranged at a consistent scale.
Do you paint albinos?
Yes. White fur is painted in warm creams and cool greys with the pink nose and ruby eyes matched from a daylight photo.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
