Painting a Bearded Dragon: what we pay attention to
A bearded dragon is painted as pattern over form. The scales follow the body — larger and more distinct on the triangular head and along the spiny flanks, finer across the back — and are painted as a texture that wraps the animal rather than as a flat grid; the spines under the chin and along the sides are drawn at the edges where they cross the background. The eye, with its round pupil and its ring of colour, and the wide, slightly smiling mouth are the focal points.
Colour morphs are matched from a daylight or basking-light photo — sandy tans, oranges, reds, citrus yellows, hypo whites — with the darker banding on the back and the tail mapped at the sketch stage. The soft belly and the underside of the beard are painted paler and warmer.
A three-quarter head study with the head raised shows the beard and the eye; a full body from above or the side on a landscape canvas shows the whole pattern. A beardie on the owner’s shoulder is a composition owners often ask for. Leopard geckos, crested geckos, tortoises and snakes are painted the same way.

Bearded Dragon portrait FAQ
How do you paint scales?
As a pattern that follows the body's form, with the scales larger and more distinct on the head and along the sides and finer on the back. The spines under the chin and along the flanks are drawn at the edges. The eye and the mouth are the focal points.
Will the colour morph be right?
Yes. Sandy tans, oranges, reds, citrus yellows and hypo whites are matched from a daylight photo, and the darker banding on the back and tail is mapped at the sketch stage.
Do you paint other reptiles?
Yes — leopard geckos, crested geckos, tortoises, snakes and others. Send the photo; the same painters, proof step and pricing apply.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
