Painting a Yorkshire Terrier: what we pay attention to
A Yorkie portrait is painted close to life size, which is why a small canvas works so well: at 11 × 14 in the head fills the frame and the dog stops being a small dog and becomes a portrait sitter. The face is sharp and bright — dark, round eyes, a small black nose, upright V-shaped ears — and it is the terrier alertness that owners recognise first.
The silky coat is painted as flowing masses rather than strands. We establish the parting down the back, the fall of hair over the shoulders and the fringe around the face as shapes of light and shadow, then draw a few individual strands where the light catches an edge. The steel-blue body coat and the gold of the head and legs are kept as two distinct colour families, with the gold warm enough to glow against the blue.
Pet-trimmed Yorkies are painted the same way with shorter strokes, and the face comes forward. A bow, a collar or a topknot band is included if it is part of how your dog looks every day.

How do you paint a long silky coat?
As flowing masses with a few individual strands drawn at the edges where the light catches them. The centre parting along the back and the way the coat falls over the shoulders are painted as shapes, and the sheen is placed once, where the light strikes the fall of hair.
My Yorkie is in a short trim — is that fine?
Yes. Many owners prefer the trim their dog wears every day. The shorter coat shows the breed's bright, terrier face more directly and is painted with softer, shorter strokes.
Can you include the bow?
Yes, if it is part of your dog. Tell us the colour; small details like a bow or a collar are confirmed on the digital proof.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
