Painting a Vizsla: what we pay attention to
Vizslas are all one warm colour, and the portrait depends on painting that colour as a range: deep russet in the shadows under the ears and chest, copper across the shoulder and thigh, a golden highlight along the skull and the bridge of the nose. Painted as a single orange, the dog looks like a toy; painted as a range, it glows. We choose a cool background — a blue-grey or a soft green — so the warmth reads as rich rather than loud.
The breed’s face is lean and gentle, with amber eyes and a nose the same colour as the coat, and those self-coloured features are part of the likeness. The long, thin ears hang close to the cheeks and are painted with soft edges. Vizslas are velcro dogs, and the expression owners want is the one aimed at them: soft, attentive, a little needy.
A three-quarter head study is the classic portrait; a dog on point on a landscape canvas is the piece for a working Vizsla. Wirehaired Vizslas are painted with a dry-brush edge and the beard and eyebrows as their own masses.

Vizsla portrait FAQ
How do you keep the coat from looking orange?
By painting the range — russet in the shadow, copper on the shoulder, a golden highlight along the skull — from a daylight photo, and by choosing a cool background so the warm coat reads as rich rather than loud.
The nose and eyes are the same colour as the coat — will that show?
Yes. The self-coloured nose and the amber eyes are part of the breed and are painted from your photo; the nose is kept warm and the eyes matched exactly.
Do you paint Wirehaired Vizslas?
Yes, with the wiry coat painted with a dry-brush edge and the beard and eyebrows as separate masses.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
