Painting a Shih Tzu: what we pay attention to

A Shih Tzu is painted from the eyes outward. They are large, round, dark and set wide, and everything else — the short muzzle, the moustache, the beard, the topknot — is arranged around them. We paint the face first, so the eyes and nose sit correctly under the hair, and then build the coat over it in flowing masses with a few individual strands drawn where the light catches an edge.

Full-coated dogs are painted as a cascade: the fall of hair over the shoulders, the fringe around the face, the topknot with or without its band. Puppy-cut dogs are painted with shorter, softer strokes and the round head shows directly. Either way, at near life size on a small canvas, the dog becomes a portrait sitter rather than a small dog.

The gold-and-white and black-and-white patterns are drawn at the sketch stage so the patches fall correctly, then painted as hair with soft transitions. The expression is sweet and a little imperious — a Shih Tzu knows it is being painted — and we keep it exactly as your photo has it.

Shih Tzu portrait FAQ

How do you paint a full-coated Shih Tzu?

As flowing masses with a few individual strands drawn where the light catches an edge — the fall of hair over the shoulders, the moustache, the topknot. The face is painted first so the eyes and nose sit correctly under the hair.

My dog is in a short cut — is that fine?

Yes. The puppy cut shows the round head and the large eyes directly and is what many owners prefer. It is painted with softer, shorter strokes.

Can you paint the gold-and-white pattern accurately?

Yes. The patches are drawn at the sketch stage so the edges fall correctly on the head and body, then painted as hair with soft edges where the colours meet.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
