Painting a Pug: what we pay attention to
Pugs are painted as a landscape of soft forms. The round head, the deep wrinkles over the nose and brow, the velvet ears and the black mask are each a shape with a lit side and a shaded side, and painting them that way — never as drawn lines — is the difference between a portrait and a cartoon. The light in the photo should be soft and slightly from above so the wrinkles cast gentle shadows.
The fawn coat is kept warm, from cream at the chest to a deeper tan along the back, and the mask is painted a warm dark brown so it stays part of the face rather than becoming a hole. Black Pugs are painted as colour, with cool and warm darks and highlights placed over the skull and the folds; they need a bright, soft photo so the wrinkles are visible at all.
The eyes are large, round and slightly prominent, and they are the expression — a Pug looks at you with the whole face. We paint them at their true size with a soft catchlight and keep the visible white at the edge subtle. The head tilt is part of the breed; if your photo has it, so will the painting.

Pug portrait FAQ
How do you paint the wrinkles and the mask?
The mask is kept a warm dark brown so it stays part of the face, and each wrinkle is painted as a form with a lit and shaded side. Drawn lines are why most Pug portraits look like cartoons; forms are why ours do not.
Will the eyes look right?
Pug eyes are large, dark, round and prominent, and we paint them at their true size with a single soft catchlight. The slight visible white at the edge is part of the breed's expression and is kept subtle.
Do you paint black Pugs?
Yes. Black Pugs are painted as colour — cool and warm darks with highlights placed over the skull and the folds — and need a bright, soft photo so the wrinkles are visible.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
