Painting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi: what we pay attention to
The Corgi is two portraits in one breed. Straight on, it is all face and ears — a fox-like head with a white blaze, large upright ears and a friendly, slightly cheeky expression that fills a square canvas. In profile, it is an outline — long, low, sturdy, with the thick coat and the deep chest — that suits a landscape canvas and shows the breed as it is.
The coat is painted from the dense undercoat outward, with the longer hair of the ruff and britches in layers where it catches the light. Reds and sables are kept warm; the white markings on the chest, muzzle and feet are painted with cool grey shadows so they sit in the form. Black-headed tricolours are painted as a black dog with warm tan points.
The famous “sploot” and the smile are part of the breed and we paint them if your photo has them. Ears up is the one thing we ask for in the reference — a Corgi with its ears back reads as a different dog. Cardigan Welsh Corgis, with their long tails and rounder ears, are painted with the same approach.

Which is better for a Corgi, a head study or the full body?
Both work. The full body in profile on a landscape canvas shows the breed's outline; a straight-on head study with the big ears fills a square canvas beautifully. Some owners order both sizes.
How do you paint the fox-like face?
The head is drawn carefully — a flat skull, a fairly pointed muzzle, large ears set wide — and the white blaze and muzzle are painted with cool shadows so they sit in the form. The dark, oval eyes and the friendly, slightly cheeky look are kept exactly as your photo has them.
Do you paint the Cardigan Corgi too?
Yes. Cardigans, with their long tails and rounder ears, are painted from this page's approach; tell us which breed your dog is so we get the tail and the ears right.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
