Painting a Maltese: what we pay attention to

The Maltese is painted white in colour. The long, silky coat is laid in as flowing masses — the fall over the shoulders, the fringe around the face, the topknot — in warm creams and cool blue-greys with pure white for the highlights, and the sheen is placed once where the light strikes the hair. A few individual strands are drawn at the edges where the coat crosses the background.

The face is the dark accents in the white: round, dark eyes, a black nose, dark lips and eye rims. We paint them crisply so the expression reads, and take care that the eyes are visible under the fringe — a topknot or a tied-back fringe in the photo is the most useful thing you can send. Tear staining is left out or kept in as you prefer.

At near life size on a small canvas the head fills the frame and the dog becomes a portrait. Dogs in a puppy cut are painted in that cut, with the round face and bright eyes showing directly.

Maltese portrait FAQ

How do you paint a long, straight white coat?

As flowing masses with sheen placed where the light strikes the fall of hair, and with warm and cool greys in the shadows so the coat has body. A few individual strands are drawn at the edges.

Will tear staining show?

Only if you want it to. Many owners ask us to leave it out; some want the dog exactly as it is. Tell us at order and we confirm on the proof.

Do you paint the puppy cut?

Yes. It shows the round face and the bright eyes directly and is painted with softer, shorter strokes.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
