Painting a Labradoodle: what we pay attention to
Labradoodles are painted around a clear face inside a soft coat. The coat — fleece, wool or hair — is massed as shapes of light and shadow, with waves or curls drawn individually only where the coat meets the background, and the face is painted first so the dark eyes and nose sit correctly under the fringe. If the fringe hides the eyes in your photos, a trimmed reference is the best thing you can send.
Colour comes from daylight. Creams and apricots are kept warm with cool greys in the shadows; chocolates and caramels deep and rich; blacks painted as colour with the waves shown as highlights; partis have their patches drawn at the sketch stage. Doodle coats change with grooming and age, so tell us which version of your dog you want on the canvas.
The breed’s expression is open and cheerful, and it is best caught from eye level. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study on a pale, cool ground is the classic; Standards look well full-body on a landscape canvas. Refined is the detail level most Doodle owners choose.

Labradoodle portrait FAQ
Fleece, wool or hair — does the coat type matter for the painting?
It changes how we paint the texture. Fleece is painted as soft waves; wool as tighter masses with curls at the edges; hair coats with straighter, softer strokes. Send a side-lit photo and we paint what is there.
Can you paint two Labradoodles from separate photos?
Yes. Two or three dogs from separate references are arranged at a consistent scale and light; we send a sketch of the layout before painting.
Which detail level suits a Doodle?
Refined is the most-ordered level for curly coats — the face is fully resolved and the coat stays lively. Painterly suits a bold, loose piece; Hyperreal is chosen for memorial work.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
