Painting a Greyhound: what we pay attention to
Greyhounds are painted the way they are built: as line and muscle. The very short coat shows the skeleton and the long, flat muscles of a running dog, and the painting draws them exactly — the deep chest, the tuck-up, the long neck, the narrow head with its rose ears — then places a soft sheen where the light strikes the form. A side-lit profile photo is the reference that makes this possible.
Retired racing greyhounds make up most of the Greyhounds we paint, and their owners usually want the dog as it is: the ear tattoos, the racing scars, the greying muzzle. We keep them, and the martingale collar if you like. The expression is gentle and a little far-away, and it is painted from your photo without softening or sharpening.
Colour is matched from daylight — fawns warm, blues cool with sheen, brindles mapped and painted through, whites with grey shadows so they keep their form. A standing profile on a landscape canvas is the classic; the “roach” — a Greyhound upside down on the sofa — is a favourite among owners who know the breed.

Do you paint retired racing greyhounds with their ear tattoos and scars?
If you want them. Many owners of retired racers ask us to keep the ear tattoos, the racing scars and the greying muzzle — they are part of the dog's story. Tell us what to include.
How do you paint the very short coat?
As sheen over form: the muscle and bone under the skin are drawn carefully and the highlights are placed where the light strikes the ribcage, the thigh and the long neck.
Can you paint my Greyhound in a coat or a collar?
Yes. Martingale collars, fleece coats and racing jackets are painted from your photo if you want them in.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
