Painting a Chihuahua: what we pay attention to
A Chihuahua is painted larger than life. At the head, the portrait is bigger than the dog — which is exactly why it works: the huge, round eyes, the apple-domed skull and the ears like sails become a composition with real presence, and the dog stops being small. An 11 × 14 in canvas with the head filling the frame is the size most owners choose.
The eyes carry the painting. They are round, prominent and expressive, and we paint them at their true size with the iris visible and a single high catchlight, taking care with the eyelids so the look is alert rather than bulging. The ears are painted thin, with light through the leather at the edges, and fully up — a Chihuahua with its ears back reads as a different dog.
Smooth coats are painted with short strokes following the fine body; long coats with soft feathering on the ears, chest and tail. Colour is matched from a daylight photo — fawns kept warm, blacks painted as colour, merles mapped and painted through. Many Chihuahuas are painted seated in a blanket or on a cushion, which is how their owners see them most.

Can a small dog fill a canvas?
Yes — we paint Chihuahuas larger than life at the head, which turns a tiny dog into a commanding portrait. An 11 × 14 in or 12 × 16 in head study is the size most owners choose.
How do you paint the large eyes?
At their true size and roundness, with the iris visible and a single high catchlight. The eyelids are painted carefully so the look is bright and alert rather than bulging.
Do you paint long-coat Chihuahuas differently?
Yes. The long coat has feathering on the ears, chest, legs and tail, painted in soft layers; the smooth coat is painted with short strokes that follow the small, fine body.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
