Painting a Boston Terrier: what we pay attention to
The Boston Terrier’s face is symmetrical and graphic — a white blaze between two black cheeks, a white muzzle, large erect ears and round, wide-set eyes — and it suits a straight-on composition better than almost any breed. We draw the pattern carefully at the sketch stage so the blaze sits on the centreline of the skull, then paint the white with cool grey shadows and the black as colour with warm highlights over the cheeks.
The eyes are the portrait. They are large, round and set wide, and they look directly at the camera; we paint them at their true size, keep the visible white of the eye subtle, and place the catchlights high and symmetrical. The short muzzle and the slight underbite are painted as they are — not exaggerated.
The short, fine coat shows the compact body clearly. Brindle-and-white dogs are mapped and painted through; seals are painted black with the warm cast where daylight shows it. The white chest and the tuxedo front make a seated full body a good composition; the head study on a plain warm ground is the one most owners choose.

Boston Terrier portrait FAQ
How do you paint the black-and-white pattern?
The white blaze, muzzle and chest are drawn at the sketch stage so they sit symmetrically, then painted with cool grey shadows; the black is painted as colour with warm highlights over the skull and cheeks. The two meet with a soft edge.
The eyes are large and round — will they look right?
Yes. Boston eyes are set wide and are genuinely large; we paint them at their true size, keep the whites of the eye subtle, and place the catchlights carefully so the look is bright, not startled.
Seal or black?
Seal reads black in most light but shows a red cast in sun; we paint what a daylight photo shows, with the warm cast where it appears.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
