Painting a Basset Hound: what we pay attention to
Bassets are painted as soft, heavy forms. The loose skin over the brow, the drooping lower eyelids, the dewlap and the enormous ears each have a lit side and a shaded side, and painting them as forms — never as drawn lines — is what keeps the expression dignified and sad rather than cartoonish. Soft light in the photo does most of this work for us.
The ears are the outline of the breed and we compose around them: a straight-on head-and-shoulders study with the ears pooling at the bottom of the frame, or a full body in profile on a landscape canvas with the ears trailing. The eyes are dark, deep-set and mournful, and the expression is painted exactly as the photo has it.
The tricolour, red-and-white and lemon-and-white patterns are drawn at the sketch stage so the patches fall correctly on the skull and the long body, then painted with feathered edges. The short coat shows the heavy bone underneath, so the strokes follow the form — the barrel chest, the crooked front legs, the long back.

How do you paint the drooping eyes and the loose skin?
As soft forms with a lit and a shaded side. The lower eyelids, the dewlap and the wrinkles over the brow are painted as flesh over bone, never as drawn lines, which keeps the expression dignified rather than comic.
Will the ears fit on the canvas?
We compose around them. A straight-on head-and-shoulders study with the ears pooling at the bottom of the frame fills a portrait canvas; a full body in profile on a landscape canvas shows the whole dog.
Which coat pattern do you paint?
Yours. Tricolours, reds and lemons have their patches drawn at the sketch stage and painted as three surfaces with feathered edges.
Do you paint from a phone photo?
Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.
Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?
