Painting a Australian Shepherd: what we pay attention to

Aussies are painted for their colour. A blue merle coat is a marbled pattern of black patches over blue-grey, often with copper points and a white collar; a red merle is the same pattern in liver over cream. We map the merle as soft-edged shapes at the sketch stage and then paint the fur through the pattern in the direction of growth, so the marbling wraps around the shoulder and cheek rather than sitting flat like a print.

The eyes are the second reason people commission this breed. Blue, amber, brown, split or marbled — they are matched from a sharp daylight photo and painted with the iris as a translucent layer, so a blue Aussie eye looks like glass, not like blue paint. The catchlight is kept small and sharp.

The coat is medium and wavy with feathering on the chest, legs and britches, and it is painted in layers with the outer waves catching the light. Aussies are working dogs and many owners want a herding or fetching piece on a landscape canvas; a three-quarter head study with the pattern and the eyes is the composition that shows the breed best in a small space.

Australian Shepherd portrait FAQ

How do you paint merle?

Merle is mapped as a pattern of soft-edged patches first, then the fur is painted through it in the direction of growth, so the marbling wraps around the body. The copper and white trim on a tri or merle is added as separate warm and cool surfaces.

Can you paint the different-coloured or marbled eyes accurately?

Yes. Heterochromia and marbled irises are matched from a sharp daylight photo and painted with the iris as a translucent layer so the colours read as eyes, not paint.

Do you paint dogs in motion?

Yes. A herding or fetching dog on a landscape canvas is a strong piece for this breed. Send a sharp, side-on action photo; blur in the reference cannot be reconstructed convincingly.

Do you paint from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as it is the original file rather than a screenshot or a photo of a photo. Sharp eyes and even light matter more than the camera. Send it and we will confirm whether it will work.

Can I order a single piece at trade pricing for a client?

Yes. Trade pricing starts from a single piece, and a project — a series for one interior, or a standing monthly order — is quoted the same way. Request the trade price list from the trade page.
