Almost the whole canvas is in the dark half of the scale: a black coat against a warm brown ground, with only the face, the collar and the cuff carrying light.

Keeping a black garment from going flat means painting it as colour — warm where the light grazes it, cool in the deep folds — rather than as an absence.

What was difficult about this one

Every painting has a passage that decides whether it works. These are the ones in this piece.

  • 01

A raised hand near the face

A hand close to the head is the most difficult arrangement in portraiture, because the two compete and the hand foreshortens severely. It is kept lower in contrast than the face so it supports the gesture without stealing it.

  • 02

    A beard as structure

Facial hair has to describe the jaw underneath, not sit on it as a dark shape. The beard is painted with the jaw drawn first and the hair laid over it in the direction it grows.

  • 03

A warm ground that stays back

The background is a close-toned warm brown, only slightly darker than the lit side of the face. It stays behind the figure through temperature and through a completely soft, unbroken surface against his sharper edges.

What to send us

For a formal portrait, photograph the sitter with light from one side and the camera slightly above their eye level. Let them hold a natural gesture rather than posing with hands flat — a portrait with a hand in it is harder to paint and much better to look at.

Not sure your photograph is good enough? Send it anyway — we will tell you honestly what it will support before you order. The photo guide covers the rest.
